GOOD ROAD NETWORK, THE KEY TO BEAUTIFUL AKWA IBOM

By Emmanuel Nicholas
Road transportation constitutes an integral aspect of a nation's development. Roads form one of the most important and a valuable public asset as it carries about 90percent of its passengers and a major access to rural communities, which form the food basket of every nation. It is all encompassing and pervasive and therefore affects the social, economic, and political life of every citizen. In Akwa Ibom State, road transportation accounts for 94percent of freight and 97percent of all traffic movements.
Before the entrance of Chief Godswill Akpabio as the governor of Akwa Ibom state some roads in the State particularly those hinterlands outside the state capital were not motorable, and 95percent of cities and rural communities never experienced good network, as some communities were cut off from the others as most ancient wooden constructed bridges were broken down, typical examples were Etim Ekpo and Enen Nsit bridges .
The cities of Abak, Ikot Ekpene, Oron, Ikot Abasi and Eket never experience the impact of development. Chief Dr Godswill Akpabio administration has wrought in terms of giving these cities good road network and other quality infrastructures, turning them from being glorified villages that were regarded or tagged townships into worthy image of urban centres hence making them attractive to investors and the locals
The government of Chief Godswill Akpabio has identified that good road network is the first infrastructure needed in any Nation that seek after rapid economic growth and he embarked upon massive road construction across the State without politicizing it, like concentrating in one zone of the State rather, he spread the road construction cut across all the tribes and geo-Political districts, showing a detribalized personality and a courageous Leader who wants to leave indelible mark on the sands of time.
In making sure quality jobs are delivered, the present administration sort for services of multi-nationals like Julius Berger , CCECC , Setraco, Stemco NIGER PET including some reputable indigenous construction firms who had distinquished themselves in terms of delivering quality jobs
.,CCEE, ACE works, Emem and Sons and Bas Engineering among others.
One of the avowed mission statements of the Governor of Akwa Ibom state was to pursue development with anger. That he has displayed in road construction and maintainace , as over three hundred roads had been constructed and he also established the operation Zero pot hole through the Akwa Ibom Roads. Among the roads constructed by Chief Dr Akapbio administration are dualization of Ekim Itam junction –Ikot Oku Ikono Road, eccentric fly over, Afaha Obong –Etim Ekpo–Urua Inyang–iwukem Road, Oron road Airport diversion, Oron Road 11 from Mbiabong –Airport, Ikot Obio Okpon /Lutheran Road, Ikot Ewang-Mbiaso Road, Ikot Umo Essien –Urua Eret –Ikot Udom Road with spur. Dualization of Aka -Nung Udoe Road, Ikot Akpa Erong –ikot Obio Nko –Nsit –Odot Road,Ikot Ntan-Obiokpok –Afaha Offiong-Mbiokporo 1and 11,Mkpat Enin-Ikot Abia –Ikot Etefia –Ikot Esang Road,Ikpe Ikot Nkon –Obotme –Arochukwu /Nkana Bridge ,Uyo-Afaha-Nkan –Ikot Etefia –Ikot Ukim Road.
Others include Oku –Obom-Ikot Ukana-Nkap/Abiakpo, Ikot Abia Eduo/Ikot Otu –Usaka Annang Road, Leprosy Hospital Road, Umoetteh Road, Ndon Umoh Road, Ebiyak Road, Iman Road,Studium Road, Stadium Road, Nsit Road, Essien Road , Ikot Ikono Etinan, Ring Road/ three Fly-over, Ikot Oku Ikono, Abak junction, dualization of Uyo- Ikot Ekpene Road, Etinan –Eket Oron –Ibaka Deep Seaport ( Mbo), 3rd Ring Road with five fly-overs, Ibeno Road dualization , Abak- Uyo Road, Utu Nsekhe –Ikot Akpa Nkuk Phase 11,Ikot Etim –Ikot Ibritam –ikot Ikara phase 1, and Oku-obom-Usaka Annang, ikot umosseien Road.
In his bid to make the urban centers attractive to investors and tourists, Chief Akpabio has constructed 19 Road in Abak, Ikot Abasi 28, Oron 34, ikot Ekpene 30, Eket 47, Etinan 13 and Uyo being the State capital has received the larger portion of this massive development, with 14 streets in Osongama Estate, 12 in financial layout, 15 in Ewet Housing , 5 Roads in shelter Afrique and 37 others spread across the capital city.
Uyo also has a lot of beautification projects to attract more tourists, Edet Akpan–Nwaniba has been beautified with a roundabout that has a water fountain in the middle, so also have both end of Dominic Utuk Avenue been beautified.
Another spot that has received this mind blowing beautification is the Ikot Ekpene Road – Uniuyo Junction which has been beautified with roundabout and flowers to make it heaven-like.
Governor Akpabio has refuse to allow education to suffer any set back in his time, as he also constructed several roads in many education institutions, among them are ,7 roads in University Of Uyo, ,construction of access Roads, culverts ,drains and Erosion control in Akwa ibom State Polytechnic ,Ikot Asurua, construction on internal roads /drainage at police Academy ,construction of internal roads at holy family college ,construction of internal Road of Akwa Ibom University of Technology, and internal road of college of Education Afaha Nsit ,
With the massive Road construction the State is the best in Nigeria in terms of good terrain. One could drive for fifty miles without pot hole or unconstructed street and road, therefore it is advisable that one should not sleep and drive as it will result in casualties because of the smooth network of roads.
A safe and efficient transportation system provides citizens with numerous economic benefits for Akwa Ibom State, its businesses, and communities. From reduced vehicle and fleet maintenance costs to increased economic development and job creation, the value of our roadways can be counted in many ways.

Well maintained roads and bridges allow convenient and safe access to all the ‘natural’ State has to offer whether you’re headed to work, importing or exporting products, exploring one of our many state parks, or simply visiting grandma. We want you and your loved ones to always make it home safely.

These Benefits include safer travel, reduced congestion, reduced fuel usage, reduced vehicle maintenance costs , job creation and related positive economic impact and Improved quality of life. Also are enhanced tourism opportunities, Improved access to everything, the Natural State has to offer Increased economic development opportunities, Job creation and related positive economic impact, Increased safety, satisfaction, and pride among local residents

Benefits of good roads for the state businesses, industries, and overall commerce include, reduction in commercial transportation costs, reduction in fleet maintenance costs ,reduced time frame for ground shipping, enhanced access to highway transportation network, Improved access to resources, markets, and customers overall boost to economic vitality, better roads mean safer travel.
Akwa Ibom consistently has one of the lowest traffic fatality rate in the country/ Traffic accidents killed 0.5 people in the State from 2007 to 2012, an average of 5percent fatalities per year. Improved safety features and roadway design will help reduce the number of people who lose their lives in traffic accidents and this is important for the state.
Statistics show that increased investment in road and bridge improvements saves lives. Making road lanes and shoulders wider, adding medians and improving bridges are just a few of the improvements that have been shown to significantly reduce fatalities. So the dualization of roads by Governor Godswill Akpabio is to save lives and add value to economics activities of the state .
Akwa Ibom State has the lowest fatality rate in the country today as roadway design is estimated to be a factor in approximately one-third of fatal traffic accidents. where appropriate highway improvements can reduce traffic fatalities and accidents while improving traffic flow and reducing congestion. Every 100 billion invested in highway safety improvements will result in approximately 145 fewer traffic fatalities over a 10-year period.
Bad roads cost business community money. Driving on roads in need of repair costs the motorists 100 million naria a year in extra vehicle repairs and operating costs — that is three thousand naira per motorist or approximately six hundred thousand naira per household. Costs include accelerated vehicle depreciation, additional repair costs, and increases fuel consumption and tire wear.
With good Roads economic growth thrives on easy access. Federal Highway Administration studies show that counties where highway-related improvements were made outperformed the rest of the nation in relative job growth. Researchers concluded that as much as 40 to 65 percent of job growth in the areas studied was attributable to transportation improvements.
Improvements to the highway system can have a positive impact on luring prospective companies and keeping existing companies in the State , increasing job opportunities for the citizens. With wonderful roads network in Akwa Ibom State provided by the prudent leadership of Chief Godwills Akpabio , surely, Akwa Ibom State is ready for economic boom, and the on-going industrialization will become a great success, as tourists will throng the state in great number , the beauty of the state is heavenly. And please again, don’t drive and sleep on motion. While going on sighting of the beautiful places don’t drive and sight to avoid accident. The breath taking terrain of Akwa Ibom state will mesmerize you. To go home safe, pack and watch.

Style is elegance — Alex Amosu

"Alexander Amosu is a pacesetter a Nigerian British to be proud of. He has broken Guinness World Records book for creating the world most expensive suit. Earlier this year, he also created world most expensive champagne, read his interview with Punch below."

His investment in luxury goods for the rich has earned him a place in the Guinness World Records book for creating the world most expensive suit. Earlier this year, he also created world most expensive champagne which went for N1.8m dollars. These are great feats for a Black British.
Obviously, Alexander Amosu, who is based in London, is driven by a force which can only be explained by him.
“I think it has to do with wanting to achieve more than I have done,” he began. At age 38, he is worth millions of dollars and makes his money by personalising bespoke suits and mobile phones with very expensive diamonds.
“With me, there is never a satisfaction to success and I am always thinking about how to make it better. As a matter of fact, I haven’t achieved 10 percent of my ability. It is my mind doing the work and I am driving myself the more.”
The first person to start urban ringtones in Europe at age 24, he says the idea cropped up as a result of playing around with the then new Nokia 3210. He composed a ringtone, sent to his brother and it became an instant hit with his brother’s classmates, 21 of whom came knocking at his door. By age 25, he made his first million. At 26, he published ICON, a magazine and at 28, he floated his first television show called the Rich & Famous.
According to Amosu, a childhood experience gingered him to hardwork and a thirst for huge success. Born of Nigerian parents, he admits having a humble background.
“My parents were not wealthy,” he reminisces. “I was born in London, taken to Nigeria when I was three years and returned to London when I was six years. We did not have the best start in life but I wanted to get the best for myself. We grew up in downtown London, slept on the floor and it was difficult. I started school and the atmosphere was not friendly either. To my peers, I was an African boy with thick African accent, I could not fit in and many things were not accessible to my brother and I. I wanted to fit in to that class and knew I needed to change my clothes, shoes and all that those famous kids were wearing.
“At 12 years, I became a newspaper boy and made 60 pounds from paper rounds. From this, I was able to buy for myself, a pair of Nike trainers. Amazingly, my peers, who never spoke to me in school, when they saw my shoes, admired it and started talking to me! I just realised what I had to do to be noticed and respected. It was a lesson to me and I never looked back since then.”
Did he make up his mind to be rich? His response was in the negative. “I made up my mind to work hard and get whatever ingredients I need to be successful. I have always believed that nobody should work to be rich but everyone should work for what gives them pride and enjoyment. When you do this, riches and fame will come,” he says.
Not denying parental influence in his life, he does not hesitate to talk about his parents: “My mother’s name is Nike Kamson-Amosu and my father is Laolu Amosu; they are from Ibadan, Oyo State. They live in England. They had had me and my younger brother in London when they came to study.
“Dad had a huge influence on me and both of them always drummed it into me that I should work hard. My great-grandfather was an entrepreneur and made singlet in Ikorodu, Lagos. Even my father had to do three jobs to keep a roof over our heads. That molded me and I was determined to work, so that they would not work again. My mother was a very hardworking woman and made an impact in my life too.”
A luxury designer, who is well known for his diamond encrusted cell phones, suit and champagne, not a few want to know how he delved into this unique business.
Punctuating his statements with hearty laughs, he says the idea of luxury goods sprang up during the era of financial crisis in Britain. “It came after I sold my ringtone business around 2004. I was thinking about what business I would do next and in my research, I discovered that despite the financial crunch, only luxury goods still kept the peak in terms of sales- Gucci, Louboutin, Louis Vuitton etc. The rich could afford to buy luxury goods while the poor got poorer. So, I decided to launch my luxury brand and I started with a mobile phone-a 2G iPhone, which I launched in Selfridges. It sold for 20,000 pounds. The launch was on Wednesday and by Friday, it was sold out!”
He didn’t stop at designing phones for the rich and famous, he forged ahead and embraced bespoke suits. The world most expensive suit, which he made, was priced at 70,000 pounds. It featured nine 18 carat gold and diamond buttons coupled with expensive fabrics from rare animals- vicuna and qiviuk.
According to him, the suit was ordered by an undisclosed buyer who wanted to attend a party in Central London. Denying being elitist in his approach, Amosu believes, “Luxury brands are not for everyone. My intention was not to mass produce. Why do I produce one product for one million customers when I can produce one product, sell to an individual and make the same amount of money that I would have made from a million customers? Every product I make is about creating something that nobody else can get because some people want the ultimate in luxury. They want it unique and they come to me and say, ‘make something special.”
Not done yet on that, Amosu says, “Money is not the issue because my clients don’t talk about money. All they want is something nobody else has in the world. Though I have made a one-off piece for an individual, there was a great demand for the suit and I made cheaper suits for others which sold for 20,000 pounds. On the champagne, we decided it will come in ranges. The one with the real diamond is 1.8m dollars but there was mass request for the cheaper champagne and it went for N65, oo0 (with faux diamond). We launched the champagne on the basis that we wanted to get some customers.”
If you think these are vanity, he disagrees. “I don’t think so. Everybody-whether poor or rich- at some point in life, wants to celebrate hardwork, achievements and all sorts. That you buy luxury goods does not mean you are necessarily pushing it in people’s faces; you are out to enjoy yourself once. That’s not vanity. You want the best for yourself and it is motivating you to work harder.  In our day-to-day life, there is something that motivates you to achieve more, which could be a car, house, accessory etc,” he explains.
Admitting he has Nigerian clients, he plans to invest in the country’s economy very soon. “I want to create jobs by bringing luxury brands-champagne, shoes, jewellery etc to Nigeria and also encourage some youth and mentor them,” he says.
As a luxury good entrepreneur, does he wear his products? He chuckles and responds: “Yes, I do, from time to time and on special occasions. I enjoy what I do and it will be wrong for me not to wear or use my products.”
His definition of style is simple: “Style is when someone looks at you and says, ‘that person looks nice, elegant, sophisticated, mature. It is when you enter into a room and stand out. I am not into tackiness. I hate people looking tacky. You have to look stylish,” he says.
Married to Tayo, a Nigerian, they have two children. Is there time for leisure especially with hectic schedules like his? He replies, “Yes. My weekdays are busy but I try to make sure that Saturday and Sunday are meant for family fun and I focus on my wife and children. To be successful in business, you have to learn how to strike a balance.”
He concludes by advising youth. “Nothing free gets to anybody. You have to be mentally capable of knowing that even if the situation is contrary, nothing can stop you if you are determined,” he says.

2015 AKWA IBOM GUBER RACE:CAN MR.UDOM EMMANUEL BE RIGGED TO POWER?.

2015 AKWA IBOM GUBER RACE:CAN MR.UDOM EMMANUEL BE RIGGED TO POWER?.
It is crystal clear that the current SSG,Mr.Udom Emmanuel, cannot contest and win any free and fair electoral contest in the state.Even in Onna local government where he hails from,he cannot contend with the structures of his kinsman,Bishop Samuel Akpan.Since 2008,Bishop Akpan has been firmly in-charge of the political structures of that place. So,it will be suicidal,fool-hardiness and efforts in futility for the new SSG and those behind his ambition to think he can emerge overnight and dislodge the existing political structures of the place and he will be a walk-over to Bishop Akpan in any electoral contest in Onna local government.Lest my motives in this article are misinterpreted, let me state clearly that am not projecting any aspirant. My intention here is to show that the speculated governorship ambition of the SSG is suicidal and dead-on-arrival.Himself and the few people behind it are on suicide mission.

As insinuated by some political contractors, the SSG and the cartel behind his ambition may be banking on rigging, manipulating and skewing the party nomination process to favor him because they know that given a free and fair contest,he cannot poll up to 3% of the total votes at the party primaries. And this brings us to the question of the day,''CAN MR UDOM EMMANUEL BE RIGGED TO POWER?''.This question can be answered in the negative because you cannot rig or manipulate electoral process where you are not popular. You cannot rig where you are overwhelmed by those opposed to you.I still do not believe the insinuation that the cartel is working on the orders of the governor. It is an irony of history that Governor Akpabio would repeat the mistake of his predecessor and it is a fact of history that Obong Attah's mistake, choice of unpopular candidate was Akpabio's blessing in the 2006 governorship primaries of the party.Despite the unpopularity and popular resentment against his son-in-law and anointed candidate,Dr.Udoma Ekarika,Obong Attah was banking on his powers of incumbency and influence on the party leadership in the state to manipulate, rig and skew the nomination process of the party to favor him. So,public opinion did not matter to him but today he is full of regrets.

It can be stated without any fear of contradiction that nine out of every ten member of the party have never known, seen nor had any kind of relationship, association or affiliation with the man and you cannot entrust your mandate to an unknown man.As a politician, you must have known, related and trusted someone before you can stake your vote with him.As at 2006,there was no local government in this state that Governor Akpabio did not have at least on hundred believers, foot soldiers, friends, associates, supporters. That was why he could run and win the race against the interest of the sitting governor. But in the case of the current SSG,there is no local government that he could boast of two believers, foot soldiers or friends.I stand to be corrected or proven wrong.

The cartel is bragging that they are in-charge of the party structures in the state and as such they will hand-pick delegates to the governorship nomination congress, camp them at a certain location, pay them in hard currencies, like zombies, direct them to vote Mr.Udom Emmanuel and bus them to the venue of the primaries and supervise how the delegates vote.Clap hands for them.

There are desperate moves by the cartel to package and introduce some politicians to the SSG but this man still do not know them.A story is told a certain state legislator who has been introduced to the SSG three times and on three public occasions the man cannot recognise the state legislator and he was snubbed by man the cartel is inducing and blackmailing him to support for governor. That is just one of many of such cases.

There are five local government chairmen in Ikot Ekpene senatorial district who were introduced to the man in an arrangee arrangement but were embarrassed when they met him at a public function and he could not recognise them.

How many state and chapter officers of the party does he know?.Not up to two.I stand to be corrected or proven wrong. How then will the cartel rig him to power?.

But I know of certain governorship aspirants who have gone far in cultivating, nurturing and sustaining relationships with the members and leaders of the party at all levels, negotiating and striking deals with them and have been intensifying their grassroots mobilization and I also nobody would want to support an unknown person.

Eket Constituency Insists On Direct Compensation for ExxonMobil Oil Spill

Rising from a town hall meeting, the people of Eket Federal Constituency in Akwa Ibom State have insisted on the immediate release of the N26.5 billion compensation from the American oil giant, ExxonMobil, over of oil spillage in constituency.
In the support of the earlier position taken on the same issue by the forum of paramount rulers from the area, the body gave ExxonMobil a seven-day ultimatum to meet all its demands or risk an indefinite protest against the company's operations in the area.
The federal constituency in presenting their positions under the umbrella of a socio-political group, the Eket Federal Constituency Vanguard, also rejected the N2.5 billion of its share from the N26.5 billion oil spill fund.
The Eket Federal Constituency Vanguard consist of community leaders, women and youth groups from Eket, Esit Eket, Ibeno and Onna local government areas of the state.
A communique issued by the group at the end of its meeting on Wednesday demanded the release of the N26.5billion directly to victims of the oil spill as earlier promised by ExxonMobil.
The controversial oil spill payment is said to be in respect of the November 9, 2012 oil spill from ExxonMobil facilities which was reported to have been 200,000 barrels of oil leaked into the Atlantic coast destroying farmlands, fishing businesses and aquatic lives in the area.
Also, the community demanded the immediate employment of 100 graduates and another 100 artisans from the host communities to make up for the alleged neglect of the people since 1998.
The group described as an insult and abuse of privilege as ExxonMobil flagrantly disrespected the agreements reached between the company and the host communities through the intervention of Akwa Ibom Government. "Henceforth, oil spill would be paid in dollars and that the communities should be allowed to select their projects and consultants," the communiqué stressed.
The group, whose facilitators were Pastor Isaiah Abia from Esit Eket and Mr. Bassey David from Onna, among others, condemned the alleged complacency of Mobil management on issues affecting its host communities.
