Rejection of Akwa Ibom state executive adoption of three governorship candidates

Rejection of Akwa Ibom state executive adoption of three governorship candidates

As the 2015 governorship election of Akwa Ibom state is drawing closer, we have the information that the state executive has adopted three governorship candidates of their choice for the said position. This means that they have disenfranchised others who are interested in contesting the election; this is against the spirit of fair play.

We at Nigeria Diaspora for Genuine Democracy want to use this opportunity to reject in the strongest term the action of the state executive as this act is not in consonance with the principles of true democracy. Rather, it is a way of treating other candidates and citizens of the state with disdain. It is necessary we draw the attention of the said executive to the fact that Akwa Ibom had never been mortgaged and will never be sold to any individual or clique.

The state belongs to all of us and we will never shy away from any form of intimidation and intrigues against our efforts to protect and solicit the rights of all citizens. Any individuals or groups who live under the illusion that they own the state should wake up from that slumber and embrace the reality that state belongs to all the citizens.

We implore all candidates in and outside the state who are interested in contesting the election to disregard the self-interest adoption of the said three candidates by the state executive and continue in their quests to become the next governor of the state as the process of who becomes the governor is going to be decided by God through the votes of Akwa Ibom people.

As strong advocates of genuine democracy, we want to remind the said state executive that democracy is the sure way to attainment of a just society. We will not keep quiet to watch the selfish-interest of few individuals throwing our state into chaos like what is experienced in other undemocratic societies. It is mutually understood that the cause of so much insecurity in the state and the nation is injustice. In order to keep our state and country safe, we must be fair to all candidates and citizens especially in this election period.

We want to state clearly that we are not against the three candidates adopted by the state executive but fairness, justice, and equal rights must be given to all persons involved.

Thank you and God bless Akwa Ibom and her people!
